How To Live & Die
"I’ve often thought about what it is that makes people happy—what one has to do in order to achieve happiness.
First and foremost is good health. If you do not enjoy good health, you can never be happy. Any ailment, however trivial, will deduct something from your happiness.
Second, a healthy bank balance. It need not run into crores, but it should be enough to provide for comforts, and there should be something to spare for recreation— eating out, going to the movies, travel and holidays in the hills or by the sea. Shortage of money can be demoralizing. Living on credit or borrowing is demeaning and lowers one in one’s own eyes.
Third, your own home. Rented places can never give you the comfort or security of a home that is yours for keeps. If it has garden space, all the better. Plant your own trees and flowers, see them grow and blossom, and cultivate a sense of kinship with them.
Fourth, an understanding companion, be it your spouse or a friend. If you have too many misunderstandings, it robs you of your peace of mind. It is better to be divorced than to be quarreling all the time.
Fifth, stop envying those who have done better than you in life—risen higher, made more money, or earned more fame. Envy can be corroding; avoid comparing yourself with others.
Sixth, do not allow people to descend on you for gup-shup. By the time you get rid of them, you will feel exhausted and poisoned by their gossip-mongering.
Seventh, cultivate a hobby or two that will fulfill you—gardening, reading, writing, painting, playing or listening to music. Going to clubs or parties to get free drinks, or to meet celebrities, is a criminal waste of time. It’s important to concentrate on something that keeps you occupied meaningfully.
Eighth, every morning and evening devote 15 minutes to introspection. In the mornings, 10 minutes should be spent in keeping the mind absolutely still, and five listing the things you have to do that day. In the evenings, five minutes should be set aside to keep the mind still and 10 to go over the tasks you had intended to do.
Ninth, don’t lose your temper. Try not to be short-tempered, or vengeful. Even when a friend has been rude, just move on.
Above all, when the time comes to go, one should go like a man without any regret or grievance against anyone. Iqbal said it beautifully in a couplet in Persian: “You ask me about the signs of a man of faith? When death comes to him, he has a smile on his lips.”
I don’t fear death. What I dread is the day I go blind or am incapacitated because of old age—that’s what I fear—I’d rather die than live in that condition. I’m a burden enough on my daughter Mala and don’t want to be an extra burden on her.
All that I hope for is that when death comes to me, it comes swiftly, without much pain, like fading away in sound slumber. Till then I’ll keep working and living each day as it comes.

The Nine Talismans
Robin Sharma, through his novels,is one such influence in my life who has always got me thinking.
Here is an excerpt from another of his bestseller that I found in my father’s library.
The Secret Letters of the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari is one novel that is bound to leave you mulling over the situations of your life for a long, long time after you are through with it (just reading I mean). And, it sure will inspire you to make remarkable positive changes in it.
Through “the nine talismans” in his novel he has got me inspired yet again to do a reality check of my life.
The Message:
The most important gift we can give ourselves is the commitment to living our authentic life. To be true to ourselves, however, is not an easy task. We must break free of the seductions of society and live life on our own terms, under our own values and aligned with our original dreams. We must tap our hidden selves; explore the deep-seated unseen hopes, desires, strengths and weaknesses that make us who we are. We have to understand where we have been and where we are going. Every decision we make, every step we take, must be informed by our commitment to living a life that is true and honest and authentic to ourselves and ourselves alone. And as we proceed, we are certain to experience fortune well beyond our highest imagination.
The Message:
What holds us back in life is the invisible architecture of fear. It keeps us in our comfort zones, which are, in truth, the least safe places in which to live. Indeed, the greatest risk in life is taking no risks. But every time we do that which we fear, we take back the power that fear has stolen from us- for on the other side of our fears lives our strength. Every time we step into the discomfort of growth and progress, we become more free. The more fears we walk through, the more power we reclaim. In this way, we grow both fearless and powerful, and thus are able to live the lives of our dreams.
The Message:
It is important to remember that just as our words are our thoughts verbalized, so our deeds are our beliefs actualized. No action, no matter how small, is insignificant-how we treat someone defines how we treat everyone, including ourselves. If we disrespect another, we disrespect ourselves. If we are mistrustful of others, we are distrustful of ourselves. If we are cruel to another, we will be cruel to ourselves. If we can’t appreciate those around us, we won’t appreciate ourselves. With every person we engage, in everything we do, we must be kinder than expected, more generous than anticipated, more positive than we thought possible. Every moment in front of another human being is an opportunity to express our highest values and to influence someone with our humanity.We can make the world better, one person at a time.
The Message:
The way we do small things determines the way that we do everything. If we execute our minor tasks well, we will also excel at our larger efforts. Mastery then becomes our way of being. But more than this- each tiny effort builds on the next, so that brick by brick, magnificent things can be created, great confidence grows and uncommon dreams are realized. The truly wise recognize that small daily improvements always lead to exceptional results over time.
The Fifth Talisman:
The Message:
There is no insignificant work in the world. All labour is a chance to express personal talents, to create our art and to realize the genius we are built to be. We must work like Picasso painted: with devotion, passion, energy and excellence. In this way, our productivity will not only become a source of inspiration to others, but it will have an impact- making a difference in the lives around us. One of the greatest secrets to a life beautifully lived is to do work that matters. And to ascend to such a state of mastery in it that people can’t take their eyes off of you.
The Message:
We do not move through our days alone or apart from the world around us. And so we must always be aware of the things and the people we allow into our lives. It’s a mark of wisdom to choose to spend time in those places that inspire and energize you and associate with those people who elevate and uplift you. Whether in our work or in our personal lives, these most positive friends and peers will inspire us to be our greatest selves and to lead our largest lives.
The Message:
Most people don’t discover what’s most important in life until they are too old to do anything about it. They spend many of their best years pursuing things that matter little in the end. While society invites us to fill our lives with material objects, the best part of us knows that the more basic pleasures are the ones that enrich and sustain us. No matter how easy or hard our current conditions, we all have awealth of simple blessings around us- waiting to be counted. As we do, our happiness grows. Our gratitude expands. And each day becomes a breathtaking gift.
The Message:
How well you live comes down to how much you love. The heart is wiser than the head. Honour it. Trust it. Follow it.
The Message:
There are no extra people alive today. Every single one of us is here for a reason, a special purpose- a mission. Yes, build a beautiful life for yourself and those you love. Yes, be happy and have lots of fun. And yes, become successful, on your own terms rather than on those suggested to you by society. But- above all else- be significant. Make your life matter. Be of use. And be of service to as many people as possible. This is how each of us can shift from the realm of the ordinary into the heights of the extraordinary. And walk among the best who have ever lived.
Just felt like sharing these with anyone who would be willing to find and try to put them to use as much as I did.

EIGHT FACTS ABOUT FAILURE
One may have many failings and yet still be far from being a failure.
2. TO FAIL IS NOT THE DISGRACE EVERYONE THINKS IT IS.
To err is to do nothing more than to join the human race.
3. FAILURE IS ONLY A TEMPORARY SETBACK.
Failure is never the final chapter of the book of your life unless you give up and quit.
4. NOTHING WORTHWHILE IS EVER ACHIEVED WITHOUT RUNNING THE RISK OF FAILURE.
The man who risks everything to try to achieve something truly worthwhile and fails is anything but a disgraceful failure.
5. FAILURE IS A NATURAL PREPARATION FOR SUCCESS.
Strange as it may seem to some of you, success is much more difficult to live with successfully than is failure.
6. EVERY FAILING BRINGS WITH IT THE POSSIBILITIES OF SOMETHING GREATER.
Analyse failure under whatever circumstances you choose and you will discover some seeds for turning failure into success.
7. WHAT YOU DO WITH FAILURES IN YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU.
Failure is either a blessing or a curse, depending upon the individual’s reaction or response to it.
8. FAILINGS ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN HOW TO DO THINGS BETTER THE NEXT TIME.
TO LEARN WHERE THE PITFALLS ARE AND HOW TO AVOID THEM.
The best possible thing to do with failure is to learn all you can from it.
With Love, Ganesh.

- Ritual of Early Awakening- Make it a habit to wake up with the sun. Try to hit the bed early so that you get enough sleep and are ready to go through the day with a relaxed mind. Getting up early would also mean that you have more time in hand during the day.
- Ritual of Music- Listen to some form of soothing music everyday.Something that you enjoy and that calms you down.
- Ritual of the Spoken Word- Recite some form of mantra daily. This would help you become a better person. Do some positive self- talk and pep yourself up.
- Ritual of a Congruent Character- Make an attempt everyday to strengthen and better your character and that can start by transforming your habit and exercising more control over yourself.
- Ritual of Simplicity- Make your life simple. Reduce your needs.
- Ritual of Pursuing Hobby- Every day spend some time on your hobby. This will calm you down and make you happy. It will make you proficient in that field.
(The 11th point is my personal addition to it.)

Lincoln to His Son's Teacher
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him that for every enemy
Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.
Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.
In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.
Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon
Teach him to listen to all men
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.
Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness.
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.
Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.
Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.
This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

what you THINK is what you GET
The law of attraction says like attracts like, so when you think a thought,you are also attracting like thoughts to you.
Thoughts are magnet and thoughts have a frequency. As you think thoughts, they are sent out into the universe, and they magnetically attract all like things that are on the same frequency. Everything sent out returns to the source- YOU.
You are like a human transmission tower, transmitting a frequency with your thought.If you want to change anything in your life, change the ferequency by changing the thoughts.
Your current thoughts are creating your future life. What you think about the most or focus on the most will appear as your life.
Your thoughts become things.
The law of attraction is a law of nature. It is as impartial as the law of gravity.
Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.
To know what you are thinking ask your thoughts how you are feeling. Emotions are valuable tools that tell us instantly what we are thinking.It is impossible to feel bad and at the same time have good thoughts.
Your thoughts determine your frequency and your feelings tell you immediately what frquency you are on.
When you feel bad, you are on the frequency of drawing more bad things.When you feel good,you are powerfully attrcating more good things to you.
Secret Shifters viz. pleasant memeories, nature or your favourite music can change your feelings and shift your frequency in an instant.
The feeling of love is the highest frequency you can emit. The greater the love you feel and emit, the greater the power you are harnessing.

I dreamed a dream
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dreamed he'd come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Remain Open
The flower, however, continued to dream. During the long nights, she imagined a heaven full of bees,which flew down to bestow fond kisses on her. By doing this, she was able to last until the next day,when she opened again to the light of the sun.
One night, the moon, who knew of the rose’s loneliness, asked:” aren’t you tired of waiting?“ ”Possibly, but I have to keep trying.”
“Why?”
“Because if I don’t remain open, I’ll simply fade away.”
At times, when loneliness seems to crush all beauty, the only way to resist is to remain open.

All for love
As soon as the clouds reached the continent the climate changed. A bright sun was shining in the sky, and stretched out beneath them, lay the golden sands of the Sahara. Since it almost never rains in the desert, the wind continued pushing the clouds towards the forests in the south.
Meanwhile, as happens with young humans too, the young cloud decided to leave his parents and his older friends in order to discover the world.
“What are you doing?” cried the wind.” The desert’s the same all over. Rejoin the other clouds, and we’ll go to Central Africa where there are amazing mountains and trees”
But the young cloud, a natural rebel, refused to obey and, gradually he dropped down until he found a gentle, generous breeze that allowed him to hover over the golden sands. After much toing and froing, he noticed that one of the dunes was smiling at him.
He saw that the dune was also young, newly formed by the wind that had just passé over. He fell in love with her golden hair right there and then.
“Good morning,” he said. “What’s life like down there?”
“I have the company of the other dunes, the sun and the wind, and of the caravans that occasionally pass through here. Sometimes it’s really hot but it’s still bearable. What’s life like up there?”
“We have the sun and the wind too, but the good thing is that I can travel across the sky and see more things.”
“For me,” said the dune, “life is short. When the winds return from the forests, I will disappear.”
“And does that make you sad?”
“It makes me feel that I have no purpose in life.”
“I feel the same. as soon as another wind comes along. I’ll go south and be transformed into rain; but that is my destiny.”
The dune hesitated for a moment, then said:
“Did you know that here in the desert, we call rain paradise?”
“I had no idea that I could be that important” said the cloud proudly.
“I’ve heard other older dunes tell stories about the rain. They say that, after the rains, we are all covered with grass and flowers. But I’ll never experience that, because in the desert it rains so rarely.”
It was the cloud’s turn to hesitate now. Then he smiled broadly and said:
“If you like, I could rain on you now. I know I’ve only just got her, but I love you, and I’d like to stay here forever.”
“When I first saw you up in the sky, I fell in love with you too, “said the dune” But if you transform your lovely white hair into rain, you’ll die.”
“Love never dies,” said the cloud “It is transformed, and, besides, I want to show you what paradise is like.”
And he began to caress the dune with little drops of rain, so that they could stay together for longer, until a rainbow appeared.
The following day, the little dune was covered in flowers. The clouds that passed over, heading for Africa, thought that it must be part of the forest they were looking for and scattered more rain. Twenty years later, the dune had been transformed into an oasis that refreshed travelers with the shade of its trees.
And all because, one day, a cloud fell in love, and was not afraid to give his life for that love.

Hafez on love
Last night I saw her face in my dream, Like moon it made my house gleam;
I was suddenly filled with mirth and glee, And thought she finally came back to me;
And having found at last the life spring, For a moment I thought that I was a king;
And like old days it was going to be, When note after note she wrote to me;
And then in the picture came my rival, And put in danger my very survival;
It was a nightmare, to say the least, For he turned out to be a cruel beast;
Oh, love is a burden not easy to carry, And it's not for just about anyone;
On me if her favors she would confer, I'll gladly give my life for her;
I'll also give her the soul of mine, If only she would give me a glass of wine;
And I'll also consider it a favor supreme, If once in a while she would come in my dream;
If not, in poetry I would like to immerse, And like great HAFIZ write the verse;

Tagore again
Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God,
First fill your own house with the Fragrance of love...
Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar of God,
First remove the darkness of sin from your heart...
Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayer,
First learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen...
Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,
First bend down to lift someone who is down-trodden. ..
Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,
First forgive from your heart those who have sinned against you.
